“Women in Parallel Empires” experimental music video re-assembles composer Cecile Chaminade’s work “Serenade to the Stars” (1911), addressing the concept of Empire in our lives and the wastefulness of technology, with humor and pathos.

The film-makers invite the audience to listen to the score as a narrative. “Empires” visually references critiques of capitalism that were active during Chaminade’s time, such as the game Monopoly created by Elizabeth Magie (1903) and the film “Trip to the Moon” (Le Voyage dans la Lune) 1902 by Georges Méliès. “Empires” celebrates human and celestial bodies, as a mutual rather than extractive relationship, a true serenade to the stars and our future.
